First life guard on the North Shore, never lost a life on his watch and he dies trying to go for help when the Hokule’a, a double-hulled voyaging canoe, capsizes during a 30-day, 2500 mile journey. In Eddie Aikau’s honor, a Big Wave Invitational was created in 1985 and the event is only held when open-ocean swells reach a minimum of 20 feet at Waimea Bay. Carlos has been invited for the second year in a row and is currently training for waves and spills, like in the image. Opening ceremony is tomorrow - so stoked for you Carlos.
